Founded in March 1949, the Swedish – Indian Society was established to promote the good relations between Sweden and India by spreading knowledge of India in Sweden by means of lectures, exhibitions, books, seminars and a variety of events. It has also played an important and supportive role in establishing the diplomatic ties between Sweden and India in its early founding days.

The Swedish – Indian Society is politically and religiously independent and it is open to all individuals and organisations with a keen interest in Sweden – India relations.

Today, the society has about 650 members and it continues to serve its purpose of spreading knowledge about India in Sweden and to establish good relations between India and Sweden. Apart from lectures on Indian culture and society, expositions, film, music and other mediums are used in order to spread Indian culture and information in Sweden.

Most events are held in Swedish, but a few lectures or seminars each year are in English.
